Houghly, Bengal

Factorij

Hooghly, on the Hooghly River in Bengal (India), was a VOC trading post. In 1656 the head office moved to nearby Chinsura, and after that both names were used interchangeably. From Chinsura the VOC ran its offices in Bengal. It bought silk, cotton, opium and saltpetre there, mainly for trade within Asia. In the seventeenth century Bengal and nearby Arakan were also a source of enslaved people for Batavia and other VOC towns.
