Paramaribo, Surinam

Stad

Paramaribo grew up around Fort Zeelandia on the Suriname River. The English had built the fort as Fort Willoughby. After the Dutch conquest of 1667 the town became the capital of the colony of Suriname. The governor and the colonial administration sat here. The slave ships also arrived here, and enslaved people were sold to planters. A large part of the population was enslaved and worked in the town as domestic servants, craftsmen and porters.
