Batavia
Governor-General Jan Pieterszoon Coen had Batavia built in 1619 on the ruins of Jacatra on Java (now Jakarta). The city became the Asian headquarters of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The governor-general and the Council of the Indies met here, and goods from all over Asia were gathered here for shipment to the Dutch Republic. Batavia depended on slavery. Enslaved people from Bali, Sulawesi, India and Bengal, among other places, long made up a large part of the population. Slavery in the Dutch East Indies was abolished in 1860.
