Curacao
The WIC captured Curaçao from the Spanish in 1634. The dry island was not suitable for large plantations. Even so, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it became the main centre of the Dutch slave trade in the Caribbean. The WIC brought enslaved Africans to Curaçao and sold many of them on to the Spanish colonies. On the island itself, enslaved people worked on smaller plantations, in households and in the port of Willemstad. In 1795 Tula led a major revolt. Slavery was abolished on 1 July 1863.
